My husband has grown to love to cook. I have so many fond memories of my Dad baking when I was little and one of my favorite classes in high school was Home Economics. Cooking is my favorite medium to love on other people and it is also a stress relief (usually) for me. My kids are always asking to see and help in the kitchen so I'm passing this love down IShastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268429080318169959.post-5831634766878292412012-04-17T21:41:00.001-05:002012-04-17T21:41:36.152-05:00Buttered popcorn! My husband really likes to watch movies. I think that my 3 girls have inherited this trait as they are enchanted until the very end with almost every movie we allow them to watch. One thing we all like to do is munch. In the summer I try to keep a veggie tray stocked and ready to go at the first sounds of, "Mom, I'm hungry". But veggies and a movie don't go hand in hand asShastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268429080318169959.post-40247802144163498162012-02-10T10:15:00.000-06:002012-02-10T10:18:07.490-06:00Cooking Ingredient Substitution Table
Sometimes you may find it necessary to substitute one ingredient for another in a recipe. Use this table as a guideline only because using a different ingredient can change the taste and texture of recipe. If it's essential to maintain the integrity of what you're making I suggest either procuring the ingredient or do some research before substituting to understand the role that ingredient Shastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268429080318169959.post-33549538162505093272012-01-08T15:08:00.002-06:002012-01-08T15:23:05.715-06:00How to Roast Garlic
I love things that have been roasted...chicken, veggies, chipotle peppers, marshmallows and so on. One of my favorite ingredients though, is roasted garlic. There is this richness that comes with roasting something. The sugars in the food caramelize and magic happens.
One dish in particular that we love is roasted garlic in is hummus, so creamy and rich and as a bonus it's good for Shastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268429080318169959.post-33636779073320613222012-01-02T14:08:00.000-06:002012-01-08T16:11:02.628-06:00What's for dinner?Lately I've found my self in a 5 o'clock tizzy. I break into a cold sweat when a member of my family asks the dreaded question..."What's for dinner?". Arrrg!! Yet again I have no idea. I try to access the photographic memory (which I do not have) to remember what ingredients I have and what the contents of the fridge maybe. My co-worker Sally just celebrated her birthday so, at her request, I made her bruschetta for her birthday treat! Bruschetta (pronounced brew-skeh-ta or brew-sheh-ta). I little history, because we all like to know about what we eat, yes?
Bruschetta is an antipasto from Italy whose origin dates to at least the 15th century. It consists of roasted bread rubbed with garlic Shastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268429080318169959.post-76964420645626597462011-11-26T17:02:00.001-06:002011-11-28T16:36:20.817-06:00Our first Thanksgiving at our homeThis is the first year that we had Thanksgiving at our home. If you're like most households you make this great turkey on Thanksgiving day, everyone stuffs themselves then seems to pass out on the couch. Did you know that its not really from the tryptophan? Yes turkey does contain a small amount of tryptophan (which really works best on an empty stomach) but really it's the eating of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner that makes a nap irresistible!Shastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268429080318169959.post-76974064165189335652011-11-21T12:47:00.001-06:002011-11-21T15:06:48.830-06:00A crazy thing I'm addicted toSeaweed! Well candy corn mixed with peanuts. When you think of Halloween or a fun fall candy one of the first that comes to mind is candy corn. Did you know it was invented in the 1880's, that's not a typo...over 100 years ago this sweet treat was born! I love this time of year. The cooler weather (meaning that snow is around the corner), family, cooking, and a time to reflect on the things that I am abundantly blessed with.
I am thankful for my family. I remember back when we were told we probably wouldn't be able to have kids...now we have a full house with 3. Tonight we had stuffed pork chops. We do often stray from chicken on the menu but my hubby does love a good pork dish. So I saw a good deal on think cut pork chops and that Stove Top has a new Apple Stuffing so our Friday night dinner now had a plan.
I combined two techniques that I've used before to prepare my chops: brineing and salting (if there is a cooking term for this I Shastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268429080318169959.post-9270271213787981942011-11-10T18:39:00.000-06:002011-11-10T18:39:41.015-06:00Toast to a newSomething fun to share with others! Jasmine to be more precise. When we make it we tend to over estimate the amount needed. So the other evening it was chilly and I wanted something warm and sweet to end my day. We already used some left over rice in supper and so as I was cleaning up, I saw that there was a small amount of rice still remaining. Wait a minute...rice, looking in Shastyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370459502114459049noreply@blogger.com1
